Tottenham Hotspur fans have mourned the decline of Jan Vertonghen after his performance against Southampton in the FA Cup.
The Belgium international was substituted in the 54th-minute against the Saints, to be replaced by midfielder Gedson Fernandes.
Spurs did take the lead against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men but Shane Long cancelled that goal out; following Vertonghen’s substitution, Danny Ings added a second for the visitors before Lucas Moura equalised and Son Heung-Min scored a late penalty to secure safe passage to the fifth round.
Vertonghen was routinely exposed throughout the first 45 minutes by the pace of Saints’ front-line and he appeared distraught on the bench after his substitution.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
And fans were left upset by the performance of the 32-year-old and, particularly, his reaction.
Just last season, Vertonghen enjoyed one of his finest ever performances in a Spurs shirt, running the show against Borussia Dortmund at left-back.
In February 2019, he scored the second goal in a 3-0 win and provided the assist for Son Heung-Min’s first.
And a trio of fans reminisced about his zenith as he potentially reached his nadir.
Vertonghen has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season but it remains to be seen how many more will be coming his way.
Meanwhile, Spurs are lining up a £4m move for a Championship ace!
