Wolves boss Mick McCarthy admitted Karl Henry's X-rated tackle on Wigan's Jordi Gomez during the 2-0 defeat at the DW Stadium was "ill-judged and mistimed".
Henry, who found himself in the media spotlight two weeks ago after Bobby Zamora of Fulham was left with a broken leg following a strong tackle, was dismissed in the 11th minute of Saturday's defeat following a high lunge at Gomez.
"I've no arguments with the sending off – it was a reckless challenge and a red card," admitted McCarthy.
"It was just a bad decision from Karl – ill-judged and mistimed. He didn't need to make the tackle.
"It's sad for him because he's not that way inclined in terms of kicking people. He'd have helped himself and helped everybody if he'd stayed on his feet.
"If he makes it – as he's said to me – we all say it's a terrific tackle. But if you don't make it you get punished for it and we've all been punished.
"It was a deserved red card, no arguments, and as soon as he did it I was planning for ten men."
Spain forward Gomez recovered from the early tackle with he and Hugo Rodallega scoring the goals which condemned Wolves to a fourth straight league defeat.
"We came here to take Wigan on in a game of football and that's what we were doing," added McCarthy.
"We started the game well and did well with the ten men for the rest of the first half as well.
"It was always going to be harder than it would have been and a long time to hold out but it wasn't impossible. I thought we did it remarkably well."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
