Amidst all the drama, controversy and anger surrounding Manchester United’s cruel Champions League exit at Old Trafford last night, I had the pleasure of attending Absolute Radio’s  fourth Rock ‘n’ Roll Football Lad’s Night In at Club Wembley.

The evening was in aid of The Prince’s Trust and was hosted by Rock ‘n’ Roll Football presenters Ian Wright, Russ Williams and Jim Proudfoot, Arsenal legend Perry Groves and Prince’s Trust ambassador and former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin.

Around £3,000 was raised on the night through auctions, donations and the opportunity to have your photo taken with Ian Wright and the prestigious FA Cup trophy.

Ahead of the Manchester United and Real Madrid clash at Old Trafford, we were treated to an insightful Q+A session with the ex-professionals and radio presenters, all which gave their two pennies worth on the beautiful game’s biggest talking points.

After an action packed first half that saw Fergie’s United dominate much of the game, we were given the chance to partake in an auction, with all the proceeds going to the charity. The most popular item on the night was a combined lot of a signed Arsenal shirt, Absolute Radio Breakfast show in-studio experience with Ian Wright and Christian O’Connell and Wembley Tour, which fetched £1,000.

One lucky bidder went away with a signed England shirt and four tickets to see England play Ireland at Wembley after paying £650, while £150 was the highest bid for a personalised Wembley Way stone.

The general feeling amongst the Booby Moore suite crowd was that United needed to score first in the second half if they were to have any chance of progressing, despite a hugely positive first 45 minutes. So when Sergio Ramos toe poked a Nani cross in to his own net, you could feel the relief set in as the Old Trafford side took one step closer to the next round.

But Nani’s controversial dismissal was the big game changer and two quick-fire goals from Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t just silence Old Trafford, but also Club Wembley.

Ian Wright’s post-match thoughts, particularly on Fergie’s decision to start with Wayne Rooney on the bench, pretty much summed up United’s disappointment and frustration. He said: “I think on this one you’ve got to have your best players in the world playing and Rooney is the one that can actually turn a game on his own.”

The night was rounded off with the opportunity to have your photo taken with Ian Wright and the FA Cup trophy, which helped bump the bucket collections on the night to £812.15 after people were asked to pay a minimum donation of £10 for the privilege.

Despite the result, it was a great evening in aid of a great charity and it was a fantastic opportunity to rub shoulders with ex-professionals and to put faces to the voices you hear on Absolute Radio’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Football show every Saturday afternoon.
